TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY! And I am super thankful that I am a year older. On this day, every year for the past 12 years or so, I woke up to a very treasured text message wishing me “a very happy birthday” and “a blessed year” from that one person who gave me life. I always looked forward to that text more than anything else because I was certain the happy wishes came from the most sacred place ever…the bottom of her heart! A phone call would follow later in the day and the conversation would entail mostly giggles because she would always ask me to pass by home later so that she could cuddle me like the newborn baby that I was.
All this is in past tense because the person that brought me into the world is no more. She has been gone for 142 days but I know that today, she is all smiles and will still send me Birthday wishes somehow. I know that that will be her sending some love my way whenever a smile spreads across my face today.
Have you heard of this quote before? “It is not happy people who are Thankful; it is thankful people who are happy.” I am one thankful person and today I am grateful not only for another year but for my mama and all those amazing birthday texts she sent me ever since I owned a mobile phone and could text.
Sometime last year, I came across the Gratitude challenge. In this challenge one is supposed to write a Gratitude List of the people who have helped shaped their life, give reasons as to why you are grateful for them and then make sure that the people named in your list get to see the post so that they may know what they mean to you.
I had put off writing this post for far too long and I thought why not do it today on my birthday? I am aware that some key people that I need to show this post are long gone but I will still go ahead and do it.
A Thank list is a list of people you want to thank for shaping you as a person. After putting together your list of the people you are most grateful for, you are to share your post with them.
Coming up with my Thank List wasn’t hard, seeing as I have always practiced gratitude and I rarely forget the good deeds that were extended to me. The thing is, I am that forever grateful person. I mean, I am that person who will thank the shopkeeper, the waiter, the security guard for opening the door for me and anybody else who has served me no matter how shoddy their service was. I am just that person and so I will get on with it.
So here goes my #GratitudeList:
It is sad that I cannot show you this post because you have been gone for so long. You believed in me so much .I think you thought I was a real life princess. You were the epitome of class and style and it is through you that I learnt how to love and take care of myself. Thank you for instilling the reading culture in me. Thank you for that first storybook “Little Red Riding Hood” that I was so obsessed with! I’ve learnt so much from reading than from anything else. Thank you daddy for also setting the standard of what my ideal man should be like.
Thank you mama for showing me that it is possible to be funny, selfless, sweet, fashionable, loving, lovable, adorable and a good cook…all in one. Thank you for always having my back and for those warm hugs and for demonstrating how strong pillars should be. You were my strongest pillar mama. Thank you!
Thank you for always believing in me more than I believed in myself. It is because of you that I always tried harder and you also made me want to do everything right. It is sad that you passed on before I could return the little favors but I know you are still cheering me on to be the best I can be. Thank you for loving me like a daughter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
When I think of you my friend Josephine, this quote comes to mind “You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” You gave me my confidence back! And the funny thing is that you never remember that you did. You are so kind, so loving, generous and so genuine. Your smile is everything! You are my oldest and truest friend and I have learnt so much from you. Our little one Kip got the real deal when you were assigned to be her mama. Thank you so much for the love and for always coming through for me. Thank you for the laughter and the adventures. Thank you for being a constant reminder that genuine people like you exist. Thank you for hooking me up back with my confidence. I know I can never never repay that one.
A boy called Emmanuel:
You are that boy that makes me appreciate my life and everything in it. I have never come across anyone so young yet so wise. You always make me feel like I am a superhero yet I am not even close to being one. I see the way you appreciate everything and that just makes me want to become a better person. I am so thankful that you are in my life and I hope that you will stay in my life forever. Thank you for letting me know that little is still something and little can go a long way. Thank you for making me feel like the most important person in your world. You appreciate everything and you keep on showing me what humility is all about. I hope you make it in life young man!
If you weren’t in my life I would never have known what it feels like to have my ribs ache from laughing too much. You make me “over laugh” .You are funny, you are loving, you are loyal but the trait I love about you the most is that you are STRONG and you just exude strength. I could never have imagined that such strength could come from such a small package. I learn so much from you everyday and I have gained so much knowledge in matters pregnancy that I feel like I am ready to have some kids of my own. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend. My ribs and I owe you.
If all sisters-in-law were like you, then this world would be a great place. Thank you for loving my brother the way you do. Thank for loving my niece the way you do. Thank you for loving us the way you do but most importantly, thank you for loving my mother the way you did. It meant the world to me.
We met and became friends just like that! I love that you are so caring and that you are always checking up on me even though I have a habit of disappearing from the face of the earth every once in a while. You are one of the smartest women I know and your friendship means so much to me. You are such an inspiration to me and you are such a good mum to your baby girl. Thank you for your friendship.
A man named George:
It is because of you that I discovered that I could write and it is because of your slight push that I got the interest to take it up not only as a hobby but as a way to help me pay the bills. Thank you for believing that I could do it and for being so cool about it. Thank you!
You guys are just everything! If I start listing down what I am grateful for when it comes to you guys, I might never finish so I will just be brief and say thank you all for being my family. You guys are way too cool! I love you all.
